This month has been quite the month for gaming.
Particularly the hero-shooter (and adjacent) genre has grabbed me this month. I put over 20 hours into the Deadlock alpha, which then spun into nearly 50 hours of Overwatch.
Apparently, I was in the mood for games that demand not only mechanical skills but game knowledge as well. Nothing else came close to the hours spent in (and out!) of those two games this month.
Not to say they were the only things played though… Far from it. In fact, this might be one of the bigger months for the range of things played as well. Chief amongst those being Witchfire. It has been in early access on the Epic Game Store for the past year or so, and near the end of September came out on Steam as well.
Still in early access- but already dozens of hours of content, I’ve barely scratched the surface of it so far with what I’ve done.

If you’ve not heard of Witchfire as yet — it is an RPG Shooter, sharing the DNA of Rogue-lites, Souls-likes, and Extraction Shooters. Unlike most extraction shooters though, this one is entirely single-player set in a dark fantasy styled world.
I’m loving it so far, but hard to say whether I’d recommend it to you. Yet. As noted, it’s early access — and cannot be completed. But hoo boy, what is here already is good. You’ll know yourself best when it comes to early access and how you feel about them.
Whether you decide to pick it up now or not though, it’s one to keep an eye on.

September Gaming Goals
Oh. Er. Right. I set myself some gaming goals for September. … I might’ve kinda forgotten about that. And I didn’t do either of them naturally, either.

So moving on!
Although… I don’t think I’m going to bring those September goals back again. Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak and Black Myth: Wukong have both been pushed to the side in favour of other games.
Instead?

- Overwatch 2: Complete the 150 game run for the ‘Hero of 2024’ Title
There is an Anniversary event running at the moment, where 150 games (although wins count as 2x games) will grant you a title. Truth be told, I’m a fair ways through this number already – but hey!
Games Played September 2024
| Rank | Game | Hours | % Gaming Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Overwatch 2 | 48.4 | 41.1% |
| 2 | Deadlock | 24.1 | 20.4% |
| 3 | Core Keeper | 10.5 | 8.9% |
| 4 | Witchfire | 7.1 | 6.0% |
| 5 | Necesse | 4.2 | 3.6% |
| 6 | Coral Island | 3.6 | 3.1% |
| 7 | Knock on the Coffin Lid | 2.8 | 2.4% |
| 8 | Metaphor: Refantazio (Demo) | 2.7 | 2.3% |
| 9 | Cyberpunk 2077 | 2.6 | 2.2% |
| 10 | Breachway | 2.4 | 2.0% |
| 11 | To the Moon – Beach Episode | 2.0 | 1.7% |
| 12 | Atlas Fallen | 1.9 | 1.6% |
| 13 | Echopoint Nova | 1.8 | 1.5% |
| 14 | Tactical Breach Wizards | 1.6 | 1.4% |
| 15 | Megaloot | 1.5 | 1.3% |
| 16 | Cities: Skylines 2 | 0.7 | 0.6% |

For October… I think it’s a fairly safe bet that Overwatch will continue to feature. Beyond that?
I have no clue!
I tried out a lot of things- many of those games with 2 or less hours were only grabbed in the last week or so of the month, and so may make a repeat visit in October. Echo Point Nova and Tactical Breach Wizards perhaps chief amongst those.
Books Read September 2024

This is (I believe) the last currently released title in the Riyria Chronicles, which goes back and acts as a prequel series of sorts to the Riyria Revelations.
I’ve been really enjoying these books. Perhaps not quite as much as Revelations, but enough so that I’ve still slowed down in an effort to savour the one I have left.
I put quite a gap between reading Revelations and Chronicles, but I do believe that as soon as I’m done here, I’ll jump across to The Legends of the First Empire series, which is set some thousand or more years before the events of the other series.
I’m invested enough in the world of Elan, and in Sullivan as an author more generally, that any scepticism I may have once held about the concept of these books has been well and truly flushed away.
