Welp, we did it! In the span of the work week, we essentially got our new house into a state where it looks like we live here. On purpose. Without a sea of boxes cluttering the view as far as the eye can see. Felt a little like a moving-in speed run at times, but when I’m back to work next week I’m pretty sure going to appreciate the fact we did it.
We’ve explored the immediate area a little, and it is an interesting place. It is a patch of new development, so walk out our door and the immediate surrounds appear as suburbia anywhere else you might imagine. But right over our back fence is farmland. Down the end of our street, in one direction? More farms.

You drive on open country roads to get into the city from here, but it only takes 20 minutes even during what passes for ‘peak’ traffic.
Compare that to where we were in Auckland, and, well… We were still only 20ish minutes from the city centre without traffic… During peak traffic hours, it was closer to an hour; more if anything had happened to disrupt what passed for flow.
We discovered on Day 3 here, that when the weather is particularly clear — you can see mountains out of our West/North West facing windows.
All to say — while early days yet, very happy with the move!
Not just Mountains on That Horizon…

Blaugust 2024 is Coming!
Belghast has once more kicked to life the month-long annual festival of blogging, designed to provide, depending on your particular circumstance, a kick-start to the life of new blogs from the blogger-curious out there1, rejuvenate the efforts of the lapsed or near-lapsed bloggers2, or just simply bring the community together for a little more togetherness.
All the details are in Bel’s post, but as a bit of a cheat sheet:
- You can sign up for Blaugust 2024 here.
- Join the year-round community Discord here.
- Follow the Blaugust Mastodon account here.
I will admit- I’m unclear at this stage how heavy my involvement this year might be. Every year I’ve participated so far (since 2019), I’ve shot for and scraped into achieving 31 posts (or one for each day of the month).
But I feel like I’m in a different place this year — and I don’t just mean physically from the house move.
You never know though — and it might be just the rejuvenation I need as well.
Whatever your case may be though, I would highly encourage you to join — everyone in the Blaugust community is wonderful and will make you feel at home whether you’ve been doing this thing on your own somewhere for years or are just looking to dip your toe in for the first time now.
