There are no “Playstation 5” at this location.

You see shelves containing all manner of gaming and geek culture paraphernalia. Magic the Gathering, Pokemon and other card games line the back wall. The main wall is separated by a great divide of colour. Black and green on one side with blue and white on the other. The blue and white shelves stand out as being all but barren.

A staff member lingers behind the counter.

The staff member looks up as you approach, poorly hiding his disinterest in being here. Upon hearing your question, he laughs before realising you were serious.

“There are none in stock. Here, or anywhere.”

I don’t understand who you want to ask about “preorder”.

“What would you like to preorder?” the staff member queries.

“Sorry, we’re not taking preorders at this stage. We don’t know when any more shipments will be available and already have too many waiting.”

Are you sure? Y/n: __

Time passes. You’re unsure how much time, but it feels like aeons. Certainly, the seasons have changed in the world outside.

Which shelves do you want to look at?

You see a sign that reads ‘PLAYSTATION 5’ spread prominently over the shelving area. There are game boxes here covering a small portion of these shelves, however, the rest lie bare.

There is a small note on white paper visible here.

In rather plain, black type, the note reads, “Playstation 5 preorders are now available again. Talk to staff for details.”

That was only a month or so ago! I was told to expect delivery of the shipment with mine in it in September but warned it could be later still.

Earlier today I received a call from an unknown number. These occasionally come through from work, so I answered it. My Playstation 5 was available to pick up! And even better, given I was in town (and in fact, in a meeting, hah) it was late night at the mall.

So! After work, I went and picked up…

Still in the box!

I’ll open and set it up this weekend. It does throw into question my whole ‘plan’ from yesterday somewhat… I really should have factored this into my thinking… I want to say ‘a little more’, but the truth would be ‘at all’.

But it may not be as disruptive as one might think. For me, there is still no killer ‘must play’ games available for it. Despite the dramatisation of the pre-order process above, the truth of the matter is I’d occasionally been looking online at what the situation was. On the one time I actually went into a store (before today) I needed to be in the mall anyway, and my path crossed with the store, so I figured, ‘Why not? I’ll ask’.

Culminating in today.

I’m pretty keen to try the PS5 update of Ghost of Tsushima.

Also might revisit Final Fantasy VII Remake with the Yuffie content added in.

I also still haven’t tried any version of the Spiderman games…

Alright, this might be a problem.

(Not that it will stop me from taking recommendations though. Hah. ;))

Grats! Have fun :D

    Naithin · August 6, 2021 at 12:13 am

    Thanks! … Although… That’s also what I’m afraid of. ;D

Mailvaltar · August 6, 2021 at 1:19 am

Congrats! No killer games for my tastes either yet, so I haven’t even tried to get one.

I’m sure I will at some point though. I think I got the PS4 at the start of its third year, and the PS3 around the same. So I guess I can wait another year or two.

    Naithin · August 6, 2021 at 12:31 pm

I never got the PS3, and got the PS4 probably around same time as you. Never upgraded it to a PS4 Pro, either, so this is my next big step up. :)

Nimgimli · August 6, 2021 at 1:44 am

I’ve been playing a lot of PS4 titles since the PS5 is so quiet. My PS4 Pro sounded like a hair dryer whenever I played a demanding game and it bugged me enough not to use it much, but not enough to get me to crack it open and replace the thermal paste. :)

I guess the big graphic showcases right now are Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart and Returnal, but I haven’t played either of them personally.

    Naithin · August 6, 2021 at 12:32 pm

    Returnal! Yes!

That one is actually on my list of wants, it provoked another check in at the pre-order situation when it came out.

    Thank-you. :D

Rakuno · August 6, 2021 at 3:31 am

I found a store here that has it for pre-order… I am still debating on it though because like you there isn’t any game I must play on it, yet. Well, there is the Yuffie DLC for the FF7 Remake, I was a bit salty when I found out that was exclusive to the PS5.

The other reason is it is still way too expensive here. Mostly because of the brutal exchange rate between the dollar and my currency, I think. So I could try to wait to see if it goes lower. But given everything going on it is not entirely possible for the exchange rate to get worse and the console more expensive as a result. Going to think a bit more about it.

    Naithin · August 6, 2021 at 12:35 pm

Pete just reminded me of Returnal. That was definitely on my list of wants earlier. But aye, the cost factor is definitely one to consider especially if not too much of interest just yet.

My main wants for the PS5 are FFXVI and God of War 2 which don’t even really have release dates yet. Hah.

Frostilyte · August 6, 2021 at 3:41 pm

Ooooh. Very exciting. Hope you had e fun with the new toy. :P

    Naithin · August 7, 2021 at 2:03 am

Upgrade process in terms of transferring saves is every bit as irritating as people make it out to be I have learned, but even so — I got my FF7R saves transferred across and had a bit of a go with that, and it’s fantastic! :D

Gaming Omnivore · August 6, 2021 at 3:45 pm

Congrats on the new pickup! I was quite fortunate to get ahold of one online the other day and if the tracking info is accurate, it should be arriving sometime tomorrow. I kept my self preoccupied today with YouTube videos comparing the nearly nonexistent load times in some of the newer games. Cheers!

    Naithin · August 7, 2021 at 2:04 am

Ooh, nice! Congrats! Hope yours arrives soon! :D

Any plans yet on what your first game pickups might be?

      Gaming Omnivore · August 7, 2021 at 10:14 am

It arrived right on time this afternoon 😁
I ended up getting one of the GameStop bundles that came with Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart and the Ultimate Edition Spider-Man/Miles Morales. Both were games I was planning on getting anyway. I want to eventually check out both Returnal and the Demon’s Souls remake too. 🎮

        Naithin · August 7, 2021 at 10:48 am

        Nice! :D

Ratchet and Clank aside, your list matches mine. I think for me I’d only get R&C as a tech demo of the level streaming tech. Albeit a very expensive demo. Hah.

So far, I’ve just gone ahead and updated my FFVIIR to the PS5 version and taken that for a spin. Not sure what my first purchase will be yet… Returnal seems the most likely candidate so far though.

          Gaming Omnivore · August 7, 2021 at 11:07 am

I keep forgetting about that Intergrade update for FFVIIR…will have to download that shortly

Telwyn · August 8, 2021 at 10:20 pm

Visited my niece and nephew recently who both have the console. We talked about games a fair amount: the ones mentioned already that they raved about were Ghost of Tsushima and Ratchet and Clank. Also we tried out the Spiderman game because husband is a big Marvel fan and the gameplay was great, though it’s not my personal cup of tea.

    Naithin · August 9, 2021 at 12:12 am

Ghost of Tsushima PS5 update is later this month, so still a liiiiiiittle more time to go! I am pretty interested in trying out the Spiderman games at some point, too, though.

Tipa · September 4, 2021 at 3:42 am

Grats on the PS5! It’s stupid how hard they are to get.

    Naithin · September 4, 2021 at 3:47 am

Thanks! I had to prioritise last year either the PS5 or the RTX 3080 for new PC; and I’m glad I chose the card but I’ll also be honest and say I didn’t expect it’d be much beyond say, March or April, before the mad rush was over and PS5 supply was stable again.

    It’s been crazy!
