Er, oops! I haven’t actually posted since the last journal. Less by design and more by just… *vague hand gestures* …time going whoosh?

I’ve been good though. Busy! But good. I’m still very much looking forward to the coming Christmas / New Year break though, sheesh. Will have four weeks over our summer to largely just… switch off. I won’t know what to do with myself! But that’s a problem I will welcome.

For a while.

And no doubt well before that ‘while’ is up… It’ll be time to go back to work. ;)

Gaming Goals

Goals for November 2023

  • Lies of P — Play for at least a further 10 hours over the month of November.
Which I expect will put me somewhere approaching the halfway mark (of a main story run) by the time I get there.
  • The Talos Principle 2 — Complete through to at least the first ‘tower’.
My mind still absolutely rebels against the fact that the first Talos Principle came out 9 years ago. I just really can’t fathom it. But a sequel is coming, tomorrow in fact. Likely ‘today’ by the time you read this. And it looks great.

Hm, I really, really failed on the first goal. Not only didn’t I play 10 hours more of Lies of P, I didn’t even play one more hour. Not from any disinterest in the game, I still think it is an amazing experience… But…

Counterbalancing that (and also perhaps contributing to the problem!), I well exceeded my Talos Principle 2 goal. I’ve finished the base game puzzles, and have started working my way through the special end-game puzzles. Which does mean that I haven’t actually seen the end of the game’s story yet, as with the game structure, you need to finish any puzzles you wish to before heading into the megastructure for the final time.

Or at least, I think that’s true. That seemed to be what the game was telling me.

Anyway, it’s very good.

Goals for December 2023

  • Alan Wake 2: Finish the Game
Alan Wake 2 has come as something of a surprise entry for me. I never played the first games, or at least I didn’t very much. I remember doing perhaps the first few hours of Alan Wake and liking it — it just got supplanted by something else as is often the way for me.

Add to that, AW2 is an Epic Game Store exclusive on PC, and I figured even if I did pick it up… Well; it’d be a ways down the road.

My main issue with EGS exclusives though has always been their purchasing of the rights for third-party exclusives. Epic published and put forward a significant portion of the funding for the development of this game… So, well, alright then I suppose.

And boy am I glad I decided to jump in. Absolute Game of the Year for me so far. I can’t see myself playing much else until I’m done with it now.
  • Lies of P — Play for at least a further 10 hours over the month of December.
Which I expect will put me somewhere approaching the halfway mark (of a main story run) by the time I get there.

I considered making ‘Finish Alan Wake 2’ my only goal for next month; but from my understanding of the game length, I suspect I’ll be able to both finish it and give another 10 hours or so to Lies of P.

But I could well be wrong, we’ll have to see!

Books Read November 2023

Reading picked up again quite substantially in November, which I’m pleased about.

I finished The Liar’s Key (Book 2 of The Red Queen’s War) and jumped immediately to the third and final book in the series, The Wheel of Osheim.

It has been good re-reading this series, and remarkably like reading it for the first time as there is so much detail that I’d forgotten over the years — or at least forgotten until I encountered it again this time around.

It has been a wee while (to say the least) since I’ve put a book review up here, but possibly I’ll do one for the series as a whole once I get done.
