Blaugust 2025 is Coming!

Krikket has now officially announced Blaugust 2025. If you’re not new to the Blaugust circuit — if you are new, don’t worry, I’ll circle back to you — that might come as something of a shock. Belghast has been our leader and rallying point for Blaugust for around 12 years.

This year, the Blaugust Mentors are running the show with Krikket stepping in as implementation-extraordinaire.

Now, I said I’d circle back for those less familiar with the event, so let’s do that.

What is Blaugust?

Let’s begin with a bit of theft, and lift wholesale from Krikket’s description:

For anyone arriving here for the very first time Blaugust is a month-long event that takes place each August which focuses on blogging primarily and has started to include other forms of serialized content over the last several years. The goal is to stoke the fires of creativity and allow bloggers and other content creators to mingle in a shared community while pushing each other to post more regularly.

Above all the goal of Blaugust has always been to prove to folks that they can in fact sit down every day and create something fresh and then share it with the world.

Posting regularly builds a community and in this era of AI-slop content, our voices are needed even more than we ever have been at any point in the past. Our hope is to create a nurturing environment where Veteran bloggers can help those just getting started and the cross-pollination of ideas can create something truly spectacular. Your blog gives you a permanent foothold on the Internet that you own and have complete control of, and that is a really good feeling in the midst of shifting trends.

Or another way — whether you’re a new blogger or old, Blaugust is all about jumping in there and getting to posting. Even for us oldies — and I’m definitely a case in point here — sometimes just a good, swift kick up the behind is what the doctor ordered for getting back into the swing of things.

The event comes with shinies as well! And who doesn’t like shinies? Shinies will be awarded as follows:

  • Newbie Blogger Award – You did it! You joined Blaugust for the very first time, and we are extremely happy to welcome you into this raucous community. As a result, we are going to recognise your efforts just for signing up.
  • Bronze Award – You made at least 5 posts during the month of August 2025.
  • Silver Award – You made at least 15 posts during the month of August 2025.
  • Gold Award – You made at least 25 posts during the month of August 2025.
  • Rainbow Diamond Award – You beat the original challenge and posted 31 times or more during the month of August 2025.

Blaugust: Community Edition (and the way I’ll likely participate)

In the wrap-up of last year’s Blaugust, I indicated it would likely be the last year I shot for the full 31 days of posting.

You see- something I (and others) have noted over the years is that when everyone (or at least, a lot of people) is pushing for that daily posting goal, then the ability to read and interact with all that additional content out there gets pressured.

Both because there is so much more of it — but also because your own efforts are being directed that much more heavily into producing your own 31 days’ worth of content!

So!

Krikket, Pete, and I, after a little chatter last year between comments and Mastodon, decided we might try something together this time around.

Krikket has embodied those conversations in the ‘Community Edition’ of the event in the following form.

Community builders will meet at least three of the following challenges:

  • Have a post count that gives you at least the Silver Award.
  • Of those posts, at least 5 should be directly inspired by a post by another Blaugust participant. Make sure you provide a link back to the post in question.
  • Engage with other Blaugust participants at least once per week.  Read posts, leave comments, join discussions in the Blaugust Discord and share posts written by others on social media.
  • Guest post on another Blaugust participant’s blog – or have someone else guest post on yours!
  • Create or join in a group project – choose a topic, find some other bloggers, and each post your own take on that topic on the same day.

For myself, I’m likely to pursue hitting the Silver Award (15 posts), with at least 5 posts inspired by and bouncing off another community post, and engaging with other Blaugust Participants (with a particular focus on commenting on other blogs).

I’m not against a guest post exchange or joining in a group project that takes my interest, but likely not aspects I’ll actively pursue.

If you might like to lead a group project, though, here are a couple of ideas from past ones I’ve done that you’re welcome to borrow from:

  • Game Play Along – example: To the Moon
Essentially, pick a game with easily noted stop points (e.g., if it has acts: perfect) and then host a set of questions for each part, or heck, share that responsibility around and change host post to post. :)
  • Succession Games – examples: Civilisation 6, XCOM 2
Turn-based games are pretty strong for this concept, where you take a single-player game (or game mode), play a limited set of turns or time, then pass the save onto the next leader. The only real hard requirement here is that you can confirm that save files are successfully transferable between people and will load without issue when sent around.

If you have any questions about those, let me know! Happy to help.

I’m Keen! What’s Next?

  • Here’s the sign-up form.
  • We also have a Blaugust Discord, which you’re welcome to join. It’s active all year round, but sees a peak in activity around this time of year. Advice and encouragement abound.

If you’d like a little more information or to see what other takes on the event are out there, then at the time of writing, here is a list of those:

Hope to see you join! And don’t fret about the post target thing. Just deciding to join and getting started is enough of a win. We’re a pretty good bunch, too — even if I do say so myself. :)

    • Haha, absolutely incredible. While I do like having a day or two lead time, I don’t think I’d ever even try get that far ahead! Well done though, it is already quite the achievement!

      • Well it’s what happens when you have a very specific theme for this year. 😊
